Jess McGuinty's Story: Embracing Curly Hair

Somewhere around the time that puberty struck, Jess McGuinty's hair grew more and more coarse and eventually started to curl. As a self-conscious 14-year-old who didn't want to stand out, she was mortified and unsure of how to deal with it. Her dad, who had passed down the curls, was sympathetic, but his motto was "bigger is better" when it came to "their" hair, which wasn't very helpful.

As Jess grew up, her hatred of her hair didn't dissipate. In 2002, she figured there had to be a better way, so she typed "curly hair" into Google. The first thing that came up was the Naturally Curly website, where she was thrilled to find an entire community of curly-haired people who shared the same struggles as she did. This discovery led Jess to make many "cyber friends" with whom she traded hair tips and horror stories.

One day, Jess came across a very basic recipe for a hair gel made from flax seeds. Inspired, she tried the recipe, but the results were less than stellar. Undeterred, she tweaked the recipe, adding other natural ingredients that she had learned are good for curly hair. The results were nothing short of miraculous, and Jess was shocked that her hair finally looked the way she wanted, and she had made the product on her stove!

Jess excitedly shared the recipe with her newfound friends on the Naturally Curly message boards, and to her surprise, she was flooded with emails from curly-headed members asking if they could just buy the "magic potion" from her, as they didn't feel like making it themselves. This marked the birth of Rockin' Ringlets Styling Potion, the product that would become the foundation of Jessicurl, Jess's line of products for curly hair.
